After analysing the first page of local newspaper, I found that it helped me gain insight into the conventions and design techniques of a local newspaper, which allowed me to be able to design my own, so I decided to do the same for the second page of local newspapers.
The Evening Echo
This newspaper, for their second page, included feature articles, in a colourful manner, which I think made the page much more attractive, however I feel that it would be more useful on the first page to attract the eye.
The paper then has three small articles, which are divided clearly, which I think is well done, as it is clear to the reader which article is which.
On this page also is a small contents, which shows the reader where to find everything on the paper. I think this is a good idea as it makes things very clear, but perhaps unnecessary, as all articles on the front page are clearly stated with what page the rest of the story is on.
I find the overall setup of this page very clear and clean, it makes it very easy to read and understand without getting confused. I think that the page is not too cluttered, but still has enough content to keep the reader's interest.
Fro analysing this page, I think I will defiantly consider the colour use for my own paper and also try and divide all sections of the paper clearly. I am going to use a similar amount of content as I think this paper did this very well.
The Courier
This page consists of one main article and three advertisements. I think the article, which is continued from the front page is well placed on the second page so the reader does not have to scatter throughout the paper to find the rest. However I find the article itself quite poorly laid out, as it makes the page appear quite uninteresting, as the image is small and placed just in the centre of the text, making it a distraction rather than an attraction.
The large amount of space dedicated to the advertisements is rather poorly laid out. I think by filling half the page with ads makes the page very bland and therefore contains little content. I think it would be much better, if the ads had been spread throughout the paper, rather than three all on one page.
After taking all this into consideration, I think from this page I have learnt that I do not want to fill the page with advertisements, but will spread them across.
East Anglia Daily Times
This page consists of a large section detailing the weather and tide information, and a large article. The weather section is very well set out, using images and colour to make it clear and also eye-catching. Th use of the diagrams also keeps a nice structure to the page, so it is clear what part are where. It uses small colourful titles for each sub-section of the weather, which is very easy to understand and makes it attractive to look at and also clear to understand.
The article, consists of the other half of the page. This article is part of the opposite pages article, as it is spread between the two pages. While I think the page is well set out, I think dividing the article between the two pages next to the weather is slightly confusing, and I think a smaller article would have been much more appropriate. I do like the use of the large image, which attracts a lot of attention.
Overall from this page, I think I will defiantly incorporate the weather section, and also the set out of the page as I think this was done very well.
